In 2017, OpenEdge began to notify our partners and clients about what then seemed a far-off deprecation of certain encryption protocols and the updates that would be required to remain compliant and processing. It all started in 2015 when the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council announced revision to their timeline mandating the deprecation of TLS 1.0 and OpenEdge made the decision to only allow connections to our processing platform that use TLS 1.2 encryption.
What is TLS - TLS 1.0 is a security protocol that some computer terminals use. In 2015, The above-named PCI Council determined that version 1.0 is outdated and is too dangerous to continue using. If workstations processing transactions using TLS 1.0 are not updated to a new version (OpenEdge requires TLS 1.2) by 12 a.m., July 1, 2018, these workstations will no longer be able to process transactions.
When we started beating the drum in 2017 regarding TLS updates, July 1, 2018 seemed a long way off; but now it’s around the corner. In the early days and weeks of 2018, we embarked on an aggressive email campaign to our clients asking, and then begging, them to update their workstations so they would be compliant with the new security standards and would not have to suffer through a processing outage. We are happy to announce that our clients came through for us. With the July 1 deadline fast approaching, OpenEdge has more than 96% of our clients compliant and we would like to extend a heart-felt Thank You to our clients for responding to the email campaigns. For those who haven’t had the chance to update, the TLS changeover deadline is literally this week – and if you haven’t started preparing yet, it’s time to take some action.
First: Check to make sure you are running a version of your Operating System software that is still receiving updates from the manufacturer. This includes any versions of Windows® above Windows 7. Microsoft® is no longer supporting any Operating Systems below Windows 7 including Windows 2000, XP, and 2003. You can find out how to use your Start Menu in Windows to check for OS updates by visiting windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Make sure your OS is capable of TLS 1.2 and fully updated.
Then: Make sure you are running the latest version of your Business Management software. Check with your software provider if you’re unsure.
If you have any questions regarding this required update or need any assistance to make the updates, please call the OpenEdge dedicated TLS 1.2 Customer Care Team at 855-443-3029.
